Detoxes for the New Year

It’s the New Year and everyone is about the Detox, especially after the excesses of the Holidays!  Well, all detoxes are different. You have to be specific as to what your goal is right now.  You may want to do and intestinal detox, a chemical detox or a liver detox. What’s your pleasure?

Intestinal Detoxes are great to clean you out.  This is good for those people who experience various degrees of constipation. Just to be clear here, constipation is going less than once per day.  I personally feel that everyone should go 2 to 3 times a day. I mean, how many times do you eat a day?  All that waste has to move out.  If it doesn’t then problems arise.  Proteins begin to putrify, carbs ferment and you get gas build up. Plus the longer it stays in there the dryer it becomes which makes it that much harder to leave.  It’s sort of like dragging a boat down a dry river bed. Not fun.  Ultimately, I’d like to see people become consistent with clean eating.  Some people might need to add enzymes and probiotics and maybe some Glutamine to heal the damage to the gut lining, but a detox will get the ball rolling, so to speak.

Or you may want a Liver Detox.  You know the Liver is one of your big detox organs. It detoxes all day everyday for you.  When it becomes sluggish at its job it can affect many things in the body, but especially the hormone system.  With all of the xenoestrogens (chemicals that mimic estrogen in the body) in the environment, it can over burden the Liver.  This is especially important if fertility is of a concern, perimenopause or menopause, or andropause.  Also, it is important to remember that the hormone system directly impacts the functioning of the nervous system and the immune system.  When one system is malfunctioning, it will eventually impact the functioning of the others.  So if you have been unkind to your Liver or you think it could just use some love, this may be the cleanse for you.

A Chemical Detox is another option.  Should the body detox itself of these chemicals? Yes.  However, human evolution takes time, our generations are much slower than a frog let’s say.  You see 50-100 years ago most of the chemicals we encounter everyday were not even invented.  Our bodies back in the old days were fine to detox our bodies.  But now with a combination of excess chemicals in our daily life and less nutritious food, the body can get sluggish and overwhelmed. You see there are chemicals on our food, in our body care products, in our cleaning products, in our air & water, etc.  These didn’t exist before, at least not to the extent they do today.  To top it off, most people don’t eat organic fresh food out of their own garden.  We don’t ingest in our diet the nutrients our bodies need to keep those detox pathways running like clockwork.  The pesticides, heavy metals and chemicals can then start to accumulate in the body.  Here is some info to give you an idea about how much is actually out there…

In 2005, the American Red Cross took samples of fetal cord blood from 10 newborns and found a shocking 287 chemicals inside the samples, which included dioxins, phthalates, pesticides, Teflon byproducts, flame retardants and many others.
And that’s really just the tip of the iceberg.
A study published in the journal Neurotoxicology took samples of the first bowel movement of 426 infants.
– 84% contained mercury – 27% contained lead – 27% percent had DDT, a pesticide that was banned in the US for the last 25+ years

So at times, a temporary boost to the detox pathways may do a body good.

Lastly, everyone asks me if they should do a juice cleanse.  Well… I am fine with a 3 day Juice Cleanse.  To flood your system with all of those nutrients is not a bad thing.  I would urge you to try to use as much organic produce as possible.  I would also ask that you combine enough veggies.  3 days of fruit juice is not the healthiest way to go in my opinion.  Fruit is best consumed whole with the fiber, but it is fine to add a little to veggie juice for flavor, just don’t get carried away. And just a side note here, don’t juice fast to lose weight.  You will generally just regain any weight lost when you return to food.  The purpose is to flood your body with pure raw nutrients for a limited time to allow the tissues of the body to heal and regenerate.  So, again, a 3 Day Juice Cleanse is fine by me.

You can stop by the office to pick up a cleanse or call to have one sent to you, or you can schedule an appointment and we can sit down with you to determine which one is best for you and your health goals.

Have a great start to a happy & healthy 2014.  Remember Health is Wealth & It’s Always Better To Be Proactive!
