Acupuncture News

I haven’t done an acupuncture news post for a few weeks and there are quite a few new studies that have come out.  Plus, the White House gave an official response to the petition submitted requesting that Acupuncture be covered under the Social Security Act & Medicare.  This is one of the biggest questions that I get here…Is it covered by Medicare?  Well, the petition was signed by over 30,000 people so hopefully this shows the American people are serious about this, plus with this many signatures it’s mandatory for the White House to give an official response.  They basically reiterated why it is not covered at this time and what would have to change in order for it to be covered, which is a lot of legislative changes in regards to language applied to Acupuncture.  It is a small victory but we are on our way to changing the language. Hopefully this will happen sooner than later.

Now onto research!

New research has found that acupuncture and moxibustion are effective for Treating Knee Osteoarthritis.  Research showed it to be safe and effective.  Better yet it showed long-term results. The conclusion stated: “Acupuncture provided significantly better relief from knee osteoarthritis pain and a larger improvement in function than sham acupuncture, standard care treatment, or waiting for further treatment.” The study documented that acupuncture for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis is “better at relieving pain and restoring function” than both conventional biomedical care and sham acupuncture.”

Acupuncture Controls Hormones to Reduce Stress.  A new laboratory experiment revealed that acupuncture regulates steroid hormones to reduce biochemical reactions to stress.  Can I get a high five to that?!   They found acupuncture  upregulates hormones in some areas while downregulating in other areas to maintain balance within the body when it is exposed to stress. And who doesn’t have stress these days?  The researchers note that acupuncture demonstrated the ability to “decrease HPAA excitability” in reactions to stress. The HPAA (Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis) controls reactions to stress along with regulating many bodily functions including digestion and immunity. The researchers documented that acupuncture initiates a cascade of biochemical responses via the HPAA to reduce stress.  I know I’m an AcuNerd, but this is great information to me.  Everyday people are asking me what will acupuncture do for me…well, this is a pretty good start, don’t you think?

Researchers find that Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine are effective for the relief of Endometriosis Pain.  That’s a big one considering the number of women that suffer from this condition in the US alone. This condition also interferes with fertility in many women.

New research shows that Acupuncture Lowers Blood Pressure and Prevents Damage to Kidneys.  In a controlled laboratory experiment, researchers applied two acupuncture points to laboratory rats with hypertension and renal interstitial fibrosis, a kidney disease characterized by destruction of the renal tubules and capillaries. Acupuncture “significantly decreased” blood pressure and decreased “damage of kidney morphology.” This is another big “Find.”  How many people do you know that suffer from high blood pressure?

Acupuncture Unlocks Frozen Shoulder Pain.  This is common in women over 40 but it can happen to anyone.  Researchers conclude that acupuncture effectively reduces frozen shoulder pain and restores functionality. Frozen shoulder, also known as adhesive capsulitis, is a disorder of the connective tissue in the rotator cuff region wherein there is pain, inflammation and motor impairment where there is little to no range of motion in the shoulder. The researchers concluded that acupuncture relieves frozen shoulder pain and improves shoulder functional ability.  Acupuncture should be included in conventional pain management protocols.

Acupuncture Heals Neck Disc Pain.  New research concludes that acupuncture is more effective than medications for the treatment of cervical intervertebral disc herniations.
