Sports Drinks & Energy Goo Oh My!

Like I promised, I’m back with my Sports Drink and Energy Goo recipes! Let’s just revisit sports drinks.  You see most people drink Gatorade or the like with any workout.  This just kills me for two reasons.

Reason #1 is that most people don’t workout enough to need an electrolyte sports drink to rehydrate.  80% or more of people that “workout” don’t sweat enough to need more than just plain water to rehydrate.  However, if you do go all out or workout outside or do hot yoga for over an hour than you probably do need to add back the lost electrolytes to help your body recover and rebalance its energy.  However, I don’t agree that Gatorade or like products are the way to go.

Reason #2 Gatorade is filled with toxins.  Are we not trying to workout to get healthy?  I mean, this is the reason I work out…to build muscle to protect my bones and increase my metabolism, to sweat out toxins, to relieve all that deadly stress, to reduce cortisol levels, and to keep my lungs and heart healthy.  So why would I add a bottle full of chemicals to my body while I’m doing something healthy for myself? You see Gatorade contains artificial flavors and colors, highly processed sugar or artificial sweeteners, and synthetic vitamins/minerals. Where is the health?

Next, I see people squeezing those gooey squeezy things into their mouths for a 45 minute spin class.  Really?  Did you eat today? I mean, if you ate something balanced, you know, some protein, veggies & fruit, then I think you can make it through a 45 minute class! These gooey energy squirts contain between 20 & 25 ingredients in each packet.  The number one ingredient is usually Maltodextrin. Can somebody tell me how you grow maltodextrin?  Exactly. Again most people don’t need these to power through their gym sessions or their 3 +/- mile run.  If you eat properly, you don’t need these.

However, there are those people who workout outdoors in the elements, train for an extended period of time or train hard.  I have natural electrolyte drink for you.  The other circumstance is that you ate a healthy lunch and want to go train at 5:00.  You don’t want to eat a meal but could use some energy. Or, maybe you are training for a marathon and need a little extra energy boost or you are going on a long bike ride over the weekend. So if this is you, I have a natural gooey squeeze replacement for you.

Natural Electrolyte Sports Drink:

1 Quart of Water

1/3 Cup of Organic Grade B Maple Syrup

1/4 tsp Himalayan/Pink Salt

Juice of 1 Lemon

Shake it up and refrigerate until needed.  This is the best electrolyte drink for you.  Bonus no Red or Blue Dyes to harm you, no artificial flavors, no high fructose corn syrup or artificial sweeteners. Just pure whole food goodness to rehydrate you. *Note that both sugar and salt will help you absorb and retain the water to prevent dehydration.

Gooey Energy Boost:

1-2 Medjool Dates, score lengthwise, remove the seed, squeeze open

Sunflower Seed Butter to fill the date

Pop ’em in and be fueled!  (These make great whole food sweet & salty snacks anytime to be honest.)  Just a little factoid for you…dates are easily absorbed and assimilated in the body and provide the body with energy within minutes after eating. No gooey packets needed! Whole food delicious-ness!
