East West Acupuncture & Wellness Center

Located in Beautiful Westchase Community of Tampa

"Where Healing is a Spa-Like Experience"

East West Acupuncture & Wellness Center provides services for the entire family from children to adults including age related issues. We provide a wide array of services including Acupuncture, Cupping, Western and Chinese herbal medicines, and Nutritional Counseling. We also have a full on-site pharmacy of herbals, supplements, and so much more. East West Acupuncture & Wellness Center strives to prevent disease from occurring and to help everyone achieve optimal physical and mental health with the most natural and effective ways possible.

To help you achieve abundant health free of pain and restrictions, we don’t so much use extensive blood tests, MRI’s and the like, but rather analyze how you feel and what you are experiencing. We listen. We have a different way of looking at chronic disease and other issues. We try to find the underlying imbalances and figure out what has gone awry in the system, so that we can treat the root cause of discomfort. To do this, we use an Oriental Medicine diagnosis along with a nutritional analysis and an overall lifestyle review.
We strive to use acupuncture, herbals formulas and real food to address conditions and balance the body rather than masking symptoms with pharmaceuticals. It is our opinion that pharmaceuticals should be the last resort. Too many are numbing the symptoms of disease rather than addressing the root cause of the condition and fixing it. That's exactly what we are here to do with you.

For those of you who are new to the Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine let me introduce you. Oriental Medicine is a well rounded medicine with the ability to treat many internal medicine issues. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the World Health Organization (WHO) acupuncture and oriental medicine have been shown effective in treating a wide variety of health conditions including acute as well as chronic conditions. See our Research page for a partial listing of conditions the NIH and WHO have shown Oriental Medicine to be effective in treating, plus links to current research.

Here at East West we offer acupuncture treatments along with additional adjunct therapies. Adjunct therapies may consist of cupping, moxibustion, auricular therapy, electro-stimulation or cold laser therapy.

The #1 reason people hesitate to try acupuncture is the needle. Don't let this deter you! The needles are so incredibly thin, like the size of a hair, and Dr. Shelly has mastered a light touch in needling. She strives to have all of her patients comfortable and relaxed during treatments. In fact, a large percentage of her patients will fall asleep on the table. So don't think it will feel like the typical injection needle. It's like comparing apples and watermelons! Plus, if you are still a little apprehensive, you can always just come in for an Herbal Consultation. In fact, in China, Herbal Medicine is the foundation of Chinese Medicine, not acupuncture.

Another thing to point out to newbies and acu-veterans alike is that this is a primary care medicine. This means that you can choose to come here for treatment for not only allergies but also common colds and the flu. In fact, if you come in, even for just herbal formulas, at the first sign that you may just be getting something, you can probably head it off at the pass and avoid the suffering. Also, we can help more random issues like a urinary tract infection, yeast infection or acne.

Many people ask on their first visit what is the bulk of what you treat. Well, anxiety & insomnia are popular complaints, but honestly, the bulk is pain management and women's and men's issues. Specifically, we treat a lot of menstrual issues, PMS, menopausal symptoms, and fertility. Pain management includes not only chronic pain but acute injuries as well. We frequently see those people that rolled their ankle while running or fell off a step and twisted something. Acupuncture and herbal medicine definitely help to speed the healing of injuries if you start right away.

Our greatest hope is that people will start seeing the Wellness Center not as the last option, but as the first stop in their attempt to heal and treat conditions. It's always a little funny when someone cancels an appointment because they are sick, when that is precisely the time they should be calling to get an appointment.
You have a lot of options here at East West. With Dr. Shelly's background in Western Herbs and Nutrition, plus her Graduate training in Chinese Medicine, she has a lot tools in her tool basket to find the right combination just for you. Because that's what it's all about, finding what's right for you. Not everyone is the same. There is not one normal for everyone like a lab test would have you think. We might have similar symptoms but everyone took a different path to get where they are and will need a different path to return to wellness.

We also have our own Herbal Pharmacy here at the Clinic. We carry hundreds of Western & Eastern formulas as well as various topical solutions, homeopathics, Bio-Identical hormone creams, Detoxes, whole food nutrients & and array of Super Foods to boost your healthy diet.

In addition, we offer laboratory tests such as hormone testing, lipid profiles, food and environmental sensitivities, and neurotransmitter testing. These can help you to get a better picture and understanding of how your body is functioning and give us guidance as to the route back to total health for you.

Dr. Shelly Masters

Dr. Shelly Masters, Clinic Director, believes healing should be an enjoyable and relaxing experience. She has mastered a light touch acupuncture technique that leaves her patients with a relaxing and pain-free acupuncture experience.

She has been in the Natural Health Business for over 20 years. She started in Nutrition and Western Herbs with clients, she did live cell microscopy with systemic enzyme supplementation programs with Chiropractors and Preventive Medicine MD's, and worked with natural product manufacturers in the sales, education and training. She then continued her studies in Oriental Medicine. However, she is not only passionate about Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine at this point, but through years of working with patients, feels much of today's illness is rooted in diet and lifestyle. She is a strong advocate of a “Real” Food & a Healthy Lifestyle but someone who lives in reality (jobs, family, kids, to-do lists). She loves teaching patients about eating real foods without it being constricting on your lifestyle. She writes a blog on this website not only about Acupuncture, but also Nutrition, Wellness Information and Recipes. She also posts regularly on the Center's Facebook page.
